A British lawmaker called for Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, to lose their royal titles on Thursday after a new Netflix documentary series lobbed fresh racial accusations at the royal family.

Bob Seely, a Conservative member of Parliament, claimed he was tabling an unidentified member of Parliament’s bill to strip Harry and Meghan of their titles after the royal couple “attacked” the monarchy in the first part of the Harry & Meghan documentary series.

“If Harry and Meghan had integrity and wanted to practice what they preach, if they think the royal family is so awful, why do they use royal titles when it benefits them?” Seely asked the Daily Mail. “I do think it is the decent thing for them to do to voluntarily give up their titles. If they don’t, I think there are various people trying to put down bills helping them to do that.”

Seely added that he could introduce the new legislation in the new year, which, if passed, would amend the 1917 Titles Deprivation Act that was used to remove titles from those who supported Germany in World War I.

Harry, in the first three episodes of the series that were released jointly Thursday, claimed there was a “huge level” of unconscious bias in the royal family.

“In this family, sometimes you’re part of the problem rather than part of the solution,” the prince said. “And there is a huge level of unconscious bias. The thing with unconscious bias is it’s actually no one’s fault.”

Seely denied the allegations that the royal family was unconsciously biased or that the United Kingdom was racist, as the couple claimed in the series. Meghan, who has a black mother and white father, also claimed that everyone was now aware of her race because the royal family made it such a “big issue.”

“The way that Harry and Meghan are going, the idea that you can sit there and monetize your misery, monetize your royal status by attacking the royal family — I’m sorry; I think something has got to give,” Seely said. “It is just very sad for them that they are parading their deep sense of victimhood when I think actually they are remarkably privileged people. Rather than telling people how miserable they are, they should be actually helping others. I don’t for one second believe that the royal family is ‘racist.’ I think it is highly dishonest and really quite unattractive to claim that. … They are just saying the same thing in a more aggressive and frankly unbelievable way. I don’t believe a word of it.”

Trailers for the documentary series dropped last week and have created buzz around the royal couple after it was learned that clips of paparazzi were taken out of context. One image in the series was actually from the premiere of the final Harry Potter installment in 2011, years before the royal couple had even met.

The second half of the long-awaited six-part documentary series will drop on the platform next week.
