Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich claimed on Wednesday that the Left is so threatened by former President Donald Trump that it would “destroy the law” in order to destroy the former president.

Gingrich was responding to a comment from Gov. Katie Hobbs (D-AZ) on Tuesday in which she said she believes her state could bring a fifth indictment against Trump, claiming she supports holding anyone accountable who broke the law by trying to overturn the 2020 election. However, the governor’s office later said she had misheard the question, according to KTAR.

“This is all crazy,” Gingrich told Fox and Friends host Brian Kilmeade. “Let’s just be clear what’s going on. The Left is afraid of Donald Trump. He is the one outsider who has shaken their whole system, and they’re willing to destroy the law in order to destroy Trump.”

Gingrich said he believes voters will nominate Trump in the Republican primary “by a landslide” and will choose Trump over President Joe Biden and his alleged corruption in a faceoff during the general election.

“I think that if the election next year is between those who defend the Constitution and rule of law and a corrupt family living out the Clinton-Obama-Biden corruption of the American system, I have a hunch the American people will repudiate the corruption,” Gingrich said.

The comments come shortly after Trump was indicted Monday night by a Georgia grand jury for alleged violations of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, or RICO, in relation to attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Eighteen other people connected to Trump were also charged.

Trump announced plans to hold a press conference next week, in which he is expected to present a report that he claims will exonerate him in Georgia. The former president has maintained that the Georgia election results were fraudulent.
