Residents in Montana can begin to apply for property tax rebates that can deliver up to $675 in rebates for eligible Montanans.

The portal for eligible residents to claim their rebate opened on Tuesday and will remain open until Oct. 1. The rebate may be claimed through the online portal or via a paper form.

The amount a taxpayer receives from their rebate is dependent on how much they paid in property taxes for their “principal Montana residence” but with a maximum of $675 for the rebate amount.

To qualify for the rebate a taxpayer must have owned and lived in a residence in the state for at least seven months, along with being billed and paying for the property taxes on the residence. The state only allows one rebate per household.

“Property taxes are too high, which is why we prioritized and secured immediate property tax relief for Montanans this legislative session. Now, it’s time to build on reforms to reduce the burden of property taxes over the long term,” Gov. Greg Gianforte (R-MT) said in July in celebrating the rebates.

Rebates filed online are sent to applicants within 30 days of the filing, whereas rebates filed on paper can take up to 90 days to be processed, according to the state.

An identical rebate will be available to residents of the Treasure State in 2024 based on tax year 2023. The rebate this year is based on tax year 2022.
