Viral singer Oliver Anthony thanks fans and asks them to work toward unity

Country singer-songwriter Oliver Anthony has released a new video message to his fans online, asking them to think about what steps they can take about the unity his song has helped create.
Anthony’s latest song, “Rich Men North of Richmond,” has been a massive hit, earning well over 11 million views and over 655,000 likes on YouTube as of Tuesday morning. Anthony stated in a message posted online that his song is not a masterpiece but that “the masterpiece and the emotions” of the song already existed within his viewers and that sometimes, it only takes a single song to let said emotions out.

“But my question to you is with, when Oliver Anthony is long gone and forgotten about, what can you do in your own life to maintain this energy, this positivity, this unity that I see among people like I’ve never seen before?” Anthony asked? “What are the next steps to make life better for people? What can you do for your neighbor?”

Anthony added that there was once “a strong sense of community” in the United States but that “we’ve really let ourselves focus too much on hate.” While a sense of community can still be felt in small towns, Anthony said, even there, the sense of community is dying out.
“And I’m no Dr. Phil, but I just feel that in this moment in time when so many people are feeling the same frustrations, it would be wonderful to capitalize on that and just use that positive energy to help other people in your life,” said Anthony. “Maybe people that are different than you. People that you wouldn’t normally connect with.”
“Rich Men North of Richmond,” performed by Anthony, features lyrics criticizing politicians and implies that the titular characters of the song are the politicians in Washington, D.C. Anthony performed live in front of a massive crowd in North Carolina on Sunday and also streamed the event on Rumble.

“These rich men north of Richmond / Lord knows they all just want to have total control / Wanna know what you think / Wanna know what you do / And they don’t think you know, but I know that you do,” the lyrics read. “Cause your dollar ain’t s***, and it’s taxed to no end / ‘Cause of rich men north of Richmond.”
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has compared the song to Jason Aldean’s “Try That In A Small Town,” a recent song that has skyrocketed in popularity with conservatives, for how both songs “reflect the sense of alienation.” Gingrich noted that many people in the U.S. do not trust the people in leadership and that Anthony, with his new song, is “cutting through and telling the truth in a way that you very seldom have people do.
