Donald Trump indicted: Former president slams Georgia charges as he claims ‘Witch Hunt continues’

Former President Donald Trump slammed the indictment against him on racketeering charges related to the 2020 presidential election in Fulton County, Georgia.
In his first statement since the indictment was unsealed late Monday night, the former president claimed the latest charges filed against him were part of a continuing “Witch Hunt” by “an out of control and very corrupt District Attorney,” in a Truth Social post early Tuesday morning.

“So, the Witch Hunt continues! 19 people Indicated tonight, including the former President of the United States, me, by an out of control and very corrupt District Attorney who campaigned and raised money on, ‘I will get Trump.’ And what about those Indictment Documents put out today, long before the Grand Jury even voted, and then quickly withdrawn? Sounds Rigged to me! Why didn’t they Indict 2.5 years ago? Because they wanted to do it right in the middle of my political campaign. Witch Hunt!” Trump said.
The post echoes messages in statements released by his presidential campaign and attorneys regarding the indictment in the Peach State. Trump’s campaign decried the indictment as “election interference” ahead of the charging document being unsealed. The former president’s attorneys called the events of Monday, which included an alleged charging document being quickly released and removed from the county clerk’s website hours before the charges were voted on, as “shocking and absurd.”
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, in a late-night press conference, said that Trump and his co-conspirators were working to “accomplish the illegal goal of allowing Donald J. Trump to seize the presidential term of office beginning on January 20th, 2021.”
Trump was indicted on 13 counts, while others included on the charging document included attorneys Rudy Giuliani, John Eastman, and Sidney Powell, along with former Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows. A total of 19 people were indicted as part of the alleged racketeering scheme, but the charging document also mentioned roughly 30 unnamed alleged co-conspirators.

The former president has been indicted in three other jurisdictions this year. Trump was indicted in Manhattan in March on charges related to the alleged falsification of business records, he was federally indicted in Florida for his alleged mishandling of classified documents in June, and he was federally indicted in Washington, D.C., earlier this month for charges related to his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election.
Trump is the front-runner in the 2024 Republican presidential primary, leading all other candidates by nearly 40%, per the RealClearPolitics polling average. Most of his opponents in the Republican presidential primary have not addressed the latest Trump indictment. Winning the GOP nomination would likely lead to a 2020 election rematch against President Joe Biden, the front-runner on the Democratic side.
