One in 5 Iowa Republicans would not support Trump in general election: Poll

About one-fifth of likely Iowa Republican caucusgoers would not vote for former President Donald Trump in next year’s general election if he is their party’s presidential nominee, according to a new poll.
While 77% of the likely caucusgoers polled would support Trump, 6% would vote for President Joe Biden, 10% would vote for another candidate, 2% would not vote, and 5% do not know what they would do, per the J.L. Partners survey.

The research also found almost two-fifths (39%) of the likely caucusgoers believed Trump should drop out of the race if he is imprisoned for federal crimes. Another 48% said they would continue supporting the former president even if he is in prison, while 12% did not know.
J.L. Partners, a Republican polling firm, surveyed 600 likely caucusgoers from Aug. 1 to 7 for a margin of error of plus or minus 4 points. Trump was arraigned for a third time on Aug. 3, appearing in a Washington federal court to plead not guilty to charges brought against him by special counsel Jack Smith regarding his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Prosecutors have requested a Jan. 2 trial date.
Trump’s other federal charges are related to allegations he mishandled classified documents after he was president and obstructed Smith’s investigation into the matter. That trial is expected to start in March in Fort Pierce, Florida.

Trump averages 44% support in Iowa to Gov. Ron DeSantis’s (R-FL) 17%, Sen. Tim Scott’s (R-SC) 10%, biotechnology entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy’s 5%, former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley’s 4%, former Vice President Mike Pence’s and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s 3%, and Gov. Doug Burgum’s (R-ND) 2%, according to RealClearPolitics.
Most of the candidates are or will be in Des Moines, Iowa, this week or next for the state’s annual fair.
