Multiple people killed in mid-air helicopter collision as firefighters fought fire: Report

At least three people are reportedly dead following a “mid-air” crash involving a firefighting helicopter that was working to extinguish a brush fire in southern California.

According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, the incident was reported around 7:30 p.m. PST as crews worked to contain the “Broadway Fire,” located about an hour outside of San Diego.

Authorities have since confirmed that the aircraft involved in the incident was operating on a contract basis for local firefighting agencies by CAL FIRE.

The crash is located on Native American land, where firefighters were fighting the 20-acre fire.

As well, it’s unclear whether the burn area around the crash site resulted from the brush fire or as a result of the impact of the collision.

As of the start of the day Monday, details about the incident and its cause are still unknown.
