Democrats are pushing for a former representative to run for Sen. Rick Scott‘s Senate seat in 2024.

Former Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell lost her bid for reelection in 2020 after only serving one term in Congress, but Democrat groups and leaders are eyeing her possible comeback, according to Politico. She has recently received outspoken support from BOLD PAC, the campaign arm of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, the UnidosUS Action Fund, and even a personal talk from Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY).

BIDEN AND REPUBLICANS DUKE IT OUT TO DEFINE THE ECONOMY

Victoria McGroary, executive director for BOLD PAC, sang Mucarsel-Powell’s praises and stressed Scott’s perceived vulnerability.

“Debbie would be such a fantastic recruit,” she said. “Rick Scott is one of the most vulnerable Republicans in the Senate. It is really time for Florida to have someone as strong as Debbie, a Latina, at the top of the ballot.”

BOLD PAC chairwoman Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-CA) argued that Mucarsel-Powell’s life story, particularly her immigration to the United States, would resonate with voters.

“Debbie is urgently needed in the U.S. Senate,” she said. “An immigrant who came to America with her mother at 14 seeking the American dream, her story is the story of so many Floridians.”

Despite the outpouring of support, the Florida Democrat hasn’t yet made a decision on whether to run again.

The Ecuadorian-born former congresswoman was elected in 2018 to a swing district in Miami-Dade County and currently serves as a senior adviser for the gun control group Giffords.

Scott, meanwhile, has tapped into his fortune to begin campaigning early. Scott’s communications director, Priscilla Ivasco, dismissed concerns about Murcasel-Powell running.

“If Florida Democrats think a radically liberal former one-term congresswoman is the solution to their problems, they’re even worse at this than we thought,” she said. “Good luck to them.”
