A judge in Southern California was arrested Thursday night after his wife was found fatally shot at their home in Anaheim Hills, the Anaheim Police Department announced on Friday.

Officers responded to reports of shots fired just after 8 p.m. on Thursday and found 65-year-old Sheryl Ferguson inside the house with at least one gunshot wound. She was declared dead at the scene, the department said. Her husband, 72-year-old Jeffrey Ferguson, an Orange County Superior Court judge, was arrested after the murder.

One other person was in the home at the same time as the police department, but Anaheim Police Sgt. Jon McClintock declined to provide details on who the person was, according to the Associated Press.

An alleged motive for the shooting has not been released, but Jeffrey Ferguson was booked into the Anaheim Police Department Detention Facility, with his bail set at $1 million.

Jeffrey Ferguson handles criminal cases in a courthouse in Fullerton, California. He previously worked in the Orange County District Attorney’s Office prosecuting drug cases, according to the North Orange County Bar Association.

No charges have been filed in connection with the shooting so far, according to the Orange County Superior Court.

“Although no case has been filed with our Court, when appropriate we will take all necessary steps to ensure full compliance with our legal and ethical obligations,” Orange County Superior Court Presiding Judge Maria Hernandez said in a statement.

The judge and his wife shared one son, but the judge also had one other son from an earlier marriage, according to the Associated Press. Jeffrey and Sheryl Ferguson had been married since 1996.
