As the White House pushes “Bidenomics” into the spotlight, voters in Michigan overwhelmingly say the economy is the most important subject, but they also have President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump in a dead heat.

A survey from Emerson College Polling shows Biden with 44% and Trump with 44% in a hypothetical 2024 election matchup, while 35% of voters say the economy is their most important issue.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT FITCH DOWNGRADING US DEBT

The economy is by far the most popular matter for Michiganders, with threats to democracy (15%), education (10%), healthcare (9%), housing affordability (8%), crime (6%), abortion access (6%), and immigration (4%) being the order of other top points listed by voters.

The Biden administration has made a big push recently to present the economy as a winning issue ahead of the president’s 2024 reelection bid, but voters seem unconvinced as Biden’s approval rating on the economy is underwater. The push by the White House also comes as Fitch Ratings downgraded U.S. debt from a AAA rating to a AA+ rating, citing a “steady deterioration in standards of governance over the last 20 years.”

Michigan has been a key swing state in the past two presidential elections, with Trump winning it in 2016 and Biden winning it in 2020, but the massive Democratic victories in the 2022 midterm elections have raised concerns over the GOP’s competitiveness in the Great Lake State.

“Just over half of independent voters, 51%, disapprove of the job Biden is doing in office. This is a pivotal group in Michigan that Biden won over in 2020 yet is struggling with both nationally and statewide in recent surveys,” Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, said in a statement.

Despite Biden’s unpopularity, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) remains popular, with a 49.3%-42.8% approval rating compared to Biden’s 50%-42.6% disapproval rating in Michigan.

For the open Senate seat in the Great Lake State, Democrats seem to favor Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) for their nominee, while Republicans have no clarity on who they want as the nominee.

The poll for the Republican Senate primary shows former Rep. Mike Rogers has 12%, former Rep. Peter Meijer has 9%, and Michigan Board of Education member Nikki Snyder has 6%, while 29% say they are undecided, and 39% say someone else.
