Food stamps: Maine SNAP recipients to begin seeing benefits in eight days

Individuals who receive payments from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in Maine will start seeing their monthly benefit in eight days.

The food stamp program in the Pine Tree State is distributed from the 10th to 14th of each month, meaning for this month, recipients will see payments distributed sometime between Aug. 10 and Aug. 14.

When a beneficiary receives their monthly payment depends on a set schedule based on their birthday.

Recipients born on days ending in 0 or 9 get their benefits on July 10, those born on days ending in 1 or 8 get their benefits on July 11, those born on days ending in 2 or 3 get their benefits on July 12, those born on days ending in 4 or 7 get their benefits on July 13, and those born on days ending in 5 or 6 get their benefits on July 14.

To qualify for SNAP benefits in Maine, applicants may not make more than a certain income depending on the size of household. For a household of one, the maximum annual income is $26,973, while for a household of five, the maximum annual income is $65,009. Requirements for other household sizes can be found on the state’s website.

In Maine, the average SNAP benefit payment per household member is $168, while about 12% of the state’s population, or approximately 161,800 people, receive assistance paying for food.

A Maine EBT, or electronic benefits transfer, card is what beneficiaries can use to buy groceries using their food stamp benefits at eligible stores.

SNAP benefits in Maine may be used for food, groceries to prepare, and seeds, but they may not be used for prepared meals. Further information on the food stamps program can be found on the state’s website.
