Food stamps: Rhode Island August SNAP payments worth up to $1,691 go out today

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program recipients in Rhode Island will receive all direct payments on Tuesday for the month of August.

The SNAP benefits, otherwise known as food stamps, will be worth up to $1,691 for Rhode Island beneficiaries enrolled in the federal assistance program.

A household of eight can receive a maximum payment of $1,691, while a household of four is allotted a maximum of $939 and a household of one receives up to $281. SNAP adds up to $211 for each additional member in a Rhode Island household.

In Rhode Island, the average payment per household member each month is $183.

The number of SNAP participants in Rhode Island is over 167,000, accounting for about 18% of the state population, according to data from 2019. More than 41.2 million people, which is about 12% of the national population, receive food stamps across the country as of fiscal 2022.

The monthly amount for active SNAP recipients is available for use through an electronic benefit transfer card, which can be swiped at checkout like a debit card in grocery or convenience stores, supermarkets, farmers markets, and participating online retailers.

The amounts distributed each month depend on the given household’s income, size, expenses, and resources. Additional guidance for Rhode Island SNAP payments can be found through the state’s Department of Human Services.

The SNAP benefits schedule for fiscal 2023 began on Oct. 1 and will end on Sept. 30.
