Actor Mark Hamill has called for people on social media to partake in a boycott of X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
Hamill, best known for his role as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars films, posted on X that the boycott will take place on Tuesday, adding it will only be effective if “everyone refrains” from posting on the platform. The call for the posting pause comes as many people have complained about the changes Elon Musk, who owns X, has made to the social media platform since purchasing it last year.

“This will only be effective if EVERYONE refrains from tweeting (X-ing?) on August 1st a/k/a #TweetlessTuesday,” Hamill posted. “Let’s show the owner the POWER OF THE PEOPLE. Honestly, would it kill you to keep your thoughts to yourself for 1 damn day? Read a book!”

Musk is in the process of rebranding X to become more than a social media platform, as the platform’s CEO Linda Yaccarino stated earlier this month that X will transform “the global town square.”

The attempt to transform the social media platform has been met with hurdles, with some onlookers critical of Musk’s attempt. Bill George, an executive fellow at Harvard Business School, recently criticized Musk, saying the updated version would be perfect for anyone who has “to write a case study on an example of a really poor takeover of an organization.”
Amid the changes to the platform, Musk has threatened to sue a nonprofit organization that researches misinformation on social media, alleging that it had lied about X and hateful speech posted by users. The Center for Countering Digital Hate released the July 20 letter they received from Musk’s lawyers on Monday, which claimed that the center made false statements about the social media platform in eight papers in the last year.
