The House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot is reportedly contemplating a criminal referral for former President Donald Trump for his alleged role in the riot.
The former president was confirmed to be under consideration for a criminal referral from the Justice Department, according to CNN. It was previously reported many Trump allies were likely to receive a criminal referral from the committee, although it has not been confirmed which allies are under the panel’s scrutiny.
JAN. 6 COMMITTEE TO MAKE CRIMINAL REFERRALS TO JUSTICE DEPARTMENT
A criminal referral for the former president would likely be symbolic, as Trump is currently under investigation by the Justice Department for various matters, including his alleged role in the Capitol riot.
The investigations by the Justice Department were assigned to special counsel Jack Smith, who was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland, days after Trump announced he was running for president in 2024.
