Former President Donald Trump’s double-digit lead over other Republicans vying for the presidential nomination held steady, not budging from 46% in May.
In a new Marquette Law School poll, nearly half of Republicans maintained their support for Trump as the GOP nominee. Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), the only other candidate who has consistently seen double-digit support, continued to lose ground in the survey. In May, DeSantis had dropped from 35% to 25%. In July, he slipped three more points, posting 22%.

Fellow candidates, including former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), and former Vice President Mike Pence, each gained traction, but they all remain in single digits.
The poll has a margin of error of 4.2 percentage points for registered voters and 5.8 percentage points for Republican primary voters.
According to the survey, DeSantis had a higher net favorability rating than Trump, whose higher unfavorable rating weighed him down.
President Joe Biden’s favorability among Democrats and left-leaning independents increased in July, with 80% having a favorable view of him.
In a general election matchup, Biden and Trump are tied with 50% each. Biden lost to Trump in the hypothetical in May, posting 47% to Trump’s 52%.
DeSantis, however, maintained his win over Biden, besting him 51% to 48%, with little change from May.

Both Trump and DeSantis notably lost ground among independents in their respective matchups with Biden.
The survey took place roughly a week before Trump announced that he had received another target letter from special counsel Jack Smith over potential charges related to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
