A crane fell near the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan on Wednesday after a fire broke out on the construction equipment.

The crane was engulfed in flames before part of it fell to the ground, hitting a nearby building in the process.

The crane appeared to be working on an under-construction skyscraper.

An alert from the New York City Fire Department’s Twitter page described the fire as a “4-alarm box” fire, also saying the building was vacant or under construction. The fire department later confirmed it was responding to the fire and included a video of the flames.

In an alert sent just before 8 a.m. local time, New York City’s emergency notification system warned residents to avoid the area and expect emergency personnel. Nearly 30 minutes later, the city sent an additional alert telling residents to expect “smoke and traffic delays.”

“Three Alarm Fire: 10th Avenue between West 41st Street and West 42nd Street, Manhattan. Expect smoke & traffic delays in area,” it said.
