Northwestern men are doing their part to evade unintended pregnancies, accounting for a 34% uptick in vasectomies since the overturn of Roe v. Wade, according to Planned Parenthood Northwest.
Roughly a dozen states have enacted near-total bans on abortion since the high court relegated increased power to regulate the controversial procedure back to the states. Officials at Planned Parenthood Northwest contend that many of the men undergoing vasectomies have been motivated by the high court decision.

“Men are interested in learning about contraception and learning about a vasectomy. I think the change in our political climate brought ideas and motivations that were there but to the surface,” Grace Shih, director of vasectomy services with Planned Parenthood, said, per King5.
Planned Parenthood Northwest has operations in Alaska, Hawaii, Washington, Idaho, Indiana, and Kentucky. Their reported spike in vasectomies comes in tandem with a torrent of other data points indicating that the procedure has been skyrocketing among men over the past six months following the overturn of Roe.
One doctor, known as the “Vasectomy King,” claimed back in June that his office went from fielding about four requests a day to between 12 to 18. Another doctor out of Missouri claimed there was a roughly 900% spike in calls about vasectomies within about a week shortly after the Supreme Court decision.
The procedure is safe and generally 99.8% effective, according to Shih. Due to the soaring demand, many Planned Parenthood clinics have opted to make the procedure free for patients.
