White House ‘always keeping a close eye’ on Trump threats

The White House declined to specifically comment on vague threats made by former President Donald Trump regarding a looming federal indictment but suggested that it’s ready to handle any threats of violence carried out by his supporters.
Special counsel Jack Smith sent Trump a target later in late July relating to his actions on and leading up to Jan. 6, and Trump claimed on social media over the weekend that “it’s a very dangerous thing to even think about” charging him with a crime.

“If you do something bad to us, we’re going to do things to you that have never been done before,” Trump wrote.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre invoked the Hatch Act during Monday’s press briefing to largely avoid addressing Trump’s comments but claimed that the federal government is constantly monitoring for potential threats of political violence.
“I’m going to be very careful. As you know, Donald Trump is a candidate, as we all know, for 2024, so not going to speak to those comments directly,” she told reporters. “But I can say that, you know, the president is and the administration has always been kept abreast and is always going to be ready for anything that might occur or may occur.”
“Certainly we are always keeping a close eye, but I’m just not going to speak directly to what the former president has tweeted over the weekend,” Jean-Pierre concluded flatly.
