Novak Djokovic announces his Australian comeback date

Tennis star Novak Djokovic revealed that he will compete in the Adelaide International as his first tournament back in Australia since his visa ban was overturned.
Djokovic will participate in the event beginning Jan. 2, ahead of the Australian Open, which gets underway on Jan. 16.

The Serbian tennis star, who has won 21 Grand Slam singles, was banned from entering the country after being deported ahead of the 2022 Australian Open after his medical exemption for the COVID-19 vaccination was denied, subsequently canceling his visa. His appeals were also denied on the grounds of public interest so as not to “excite anti-vax sentiment.”
In September, Djokovic learned that Australian officials were prepared to overturn the three-year visa ban against him. Last month, Australian Immigration Minister Andrew Giles made it official.
“I was very happy to receive the news yesterday. It was a relief obviously knowing what I and the people closest to me in my life have been through this year with what happened in Australia and post-Australia. I could not receive better news for sure,” Djokovic said, per PA Media, in November.
