President Joe Biden announced on Monday that Shuwanza Goff would serve as the new director of the White House Office of Legislative Affairs starting in August.
Goff will succeed Louisa Terrell, a top staffer who is set to depart her administration job at the end of the month. Terrell served as a key go-between for Biden and congressional lawmakers in multiple standoffs, including the debt ceiling saga and passage of the bipartisan infrastructure law and Inflation Reduction Act.
BIDEN BETS ON ‘ECONOMY GOOD, REPUBLICANS BAD’ REELECTION MESSAGE
“Shuwanza is a proven leader and trusted voice on both sides of the aisle. She returns to the White House with strong relationships across both Chambers, forged over more than a decade on Capitol Hill,” Biden wrote in a statement on Monday afternoon. “As my Deputy Director of Legislative Affairs, Shuwanza helped pass monumental pieces of legislation through Congress: from the American Rescue Plan and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill, to the Chips and Science Act and the Inflation Reduction Act.”
“Shuwanza’s close partnership with my decadeslong friends in the House and Senate, and her expertise, instincts and deep respect for the United States Congress will continue to serve our Administration and the American people well,” he closed.
Before joining the Biden White House, Goff served as director of legislative operations for Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD). White House officials said her time on Capitol Hill allowed Goff to build strong relationships with Republican staff, including in leadership offices.
