Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) accused special counsel Jack Smith and Democrats of “election meddling” following reports that Smith sent a target letter to former President Donald Trump about his investigation.
Trump has been indicted twice: once in New York on state criminal charges for hush money payments and once in federal court following Smith’s other investigation into the former president’s handling of classified documents.
The target letter, which Trump said he received over the weekend, reportedly informs him that the Justice Department is investigating his actions during and after the 2020 election that led to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
However, Greene said in a Wednesday interview on Fox Business’s Kudlow that these indictments and media reports are a political effort by Democrats to secure victories in 2024.
“We don’t even know the charges he’s bringing against President Trump, but it’s election meddling for sure,” Greene said.
“The Democrats know one thing: If they can cover up the Biden crimes, if they can cover up Democrat corruption and crimes, that they can smear President Trump and keep his name in the headlines with allegations of crimes. That’s how they can affect elections, and that is extremely concerning. And that looks to be what they’re doing for 2024.”

After news broke that Trump received the letter, Greene had tweeted that Smith was “weaponizing the Department of Justice against President Trump” and called the possible third indictment “absolute bulls***.”
Sources familiar with the target letter situation told ABC News that Smith is looking to charge Trump on three federal statutes, including conspiracy to commit offense or to defraud the United States, deprivation of rights under color of law, and tampering with a witness, victim, or an informant.
