House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) denied holding a “strategy session” with former President Donald Trump over the latter’s likely third indictment.
Speaking with reporters at the Capitol on Wednesday, McCarthy laughed at the suggestion that he had held such a call.

“No, no, there was no strategy session about a possible indictment,” the speaker said in between laughs. “I think the strategy sessions happen in the Democrats’ Department of Justice where they go after anybody who is running against the president. It seems as though the more you go up in the polls, the more likely you are to get indicted.”
However, McCarthy did say that he talked with Trump on the phone daily, though apparently not about the likely indictment.
His statement contradicts earlier reports that the two had a phone call on Tuesday where they strategized about how to go on the offensive against the DOJ following news that Trump was being targeted in special counsel Jack Smith’s Jan. 6 investigation. House GOP Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY) was also alleged to have taken part in the talks.

Trump announced this week that he had been informed by Smith that he is the target of an investigation into the Jan. 6 riot and efforts to overturn the 2020 election. He is expected to be indicted for a third time over the investigation.
Many of Trump’s House allies have denounced the investigation, including Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), who quickly announced that he would introduce legislation to defund Smith’s investigation altogether.
