Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was seen criticizing Muslims who expressed concern over LGBT content in education, with footage of his comments shared on social media.

Trudeau was seen talking with a man at the Baitun-Nur Mosque in Calgary, Canada, where the man asked the prime minister to “protect our belief” and “our culture as well.” Trudeau responded by saying that he had heard about the concerns “many times” and was aware of it being a “very real issue,” according to the video shared on TikTok.

“First of all, there is an awful lot of misinformation and disinformation out there,” Trudeau told the man. “People on social media, particularly fueled by the American right wing, are spreading a lot of untruths about what is actually in the curriculum.”

Trudeau went on to say that something that is “really, really important” for Canada is “a world place that stands up for everybody’s rights.” He also described how the Canadian government has supported the Muslim community, including pushing back against the previous conservative administration’s campaign against Islam.

The prime minister’s comment on misinformation spread by people from the “American right wing” was mocked on social media, including by Twitter owner Elon Musk, who responded with the clown emoji.

Trudeau has positioned himself as an ally of the LGBT community. In 2021, the Canadian prime minister caused confusion after he tweeted the extended acronym “2SLGBTQIAA+,” also leading to mockery.
