Gilgo Beach murders: Long Beach serial killer suspect arrested and identified by police

A suspect in the notorious Gilgo Beach serial killings that occurred on Long Island, New York, more than a decade ago is now in police custody as of Friday morning.

The suspect was identified as Rex Heuermann, 59, who allegedly murdered multiple people on Long Island between 2010 and 2011, according to law enforcement officials. Local police found at least 11 sets of human remains in connection to the case since then, according to NBC News. Heuermann is expected to appear in court later on Friday.

Suffolk County’s police and district attorney are leading the investigation.

The Gilgo Beach murders attracted national attention for the last decade and even inspired a Netflix film adaptation.

Heuermann hailed from Massapequa, in Nassau County, Long Island, which lies just west of Suffolk County. This location was where most of the human remains were found in the unsolved case.

A spokesperson for Suffolk County’s district attorney said Friday morning that the latest development was a “significant” one. A court proceeding occurred later in the morning.

A news conference is set for 4 p.m. Friday, with the district attorney’s office, local law enforcement, the FBI, and New York State Police taking part.
