Threads unavailable in EU over user privacy policy concerns

Meta’s Twitter clone, Instagram Threads, is unavailable in the European Union, and it may not be for some time.
As the app continues to gain users, those living within the EU are being left behind due to various regulations on the management of user data privacy.

Meta reportedly told the Independent that it has avoided making Threads available in the EU due to a lack of clarity regarding its user data privacy laws, including the General Data Protection Regulation and the Digital Markets Law, which will take effect in 2024 and impact how companies can use users’ information.
The decision follows the EU’s Data Protection Commission finding Meta’s means for processing Facebook users’ data to be unlawful in the EU. Meta was fined $222 million for its data collection practices on Facebook and $201 million for similar practices at Instagram.

Threads made its debut last week as an app that will allow users to microblog like Twitter.
Since, Twitter has threatened legal action, arguing that Meta had taken former Twitter employees to create a copycat.
