A Russian missile strike killed four people and injured another 32 in Ukraine’s western city of Lviv on Thursday in one of the biggest attacks on civilian infrastructure since Russia invaded Ukraine.

The missile struck an apartment building and decimated entire floors. There are fears that more people are trapped under the rubble from the collapsed structure.

In addition to the apartment building, dozens of homes and university dormitories were also reportedly damaged.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky posted a video showcasing the devastating damage done to the building. He offered his condolences to the loved ones of those killed and wrote, “There will definitely be a response to the enemy. A strong one.”

Ukraine Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said seven people were rescued from the apartment building, but he underscored the fear that more people could be hurt or dead, per BBC.

The British media outlet added that Ukraine’s Air Force claimed Russia launched the missiles from the Black Sea, but Russia’s military has not commented on the attack.

Lviv is located in western Ukraine, about 45 miles from the Polish border. Because much of the fighting in the war has taken place in southern and eastern regions of the country, Lviv has not faced such constant assaults as Kyiv, Kherson, and other cities.

Ukraine is about a month into its counteroffensive to reclaim territory lost to Russia since the February 2022 invasion. While dealing with its own problems at home, Russia has been fairly successful in its efforts to repel Ukraine’s advance.
