Kamala Harris communications director set to depart after nearly a year

Vice President Kamala Harris’s communications director Jamal Simmons is leaving his position after nearly one year in the role, according to an internal memo.
Simmons, a veteran Democratic messaging operative, joined Harris’s team in January following months of staffing tumult that saw the exits of several high-profile communications aides.

Harris’s chief of staff Lorraine Voles announced Simmons’s departure in an email to staff, saying that he had “agreed to come on board for a year.”
Voles thanked Simmons for his leadership and praised his work, saying she “knew he could help me steady the ship” when she recruited him.
“The results are evident,” she added.
Voles said Simmons’s wife had recently accepted a new position in New York. He has young children, she said, and the family intends soon to move to the city.
She alerted staff shortly before a report in Politico broke the news.
Voles appeared to indicate that the administration had not yet selected a replacement for Simmons. According to the email, Voles said she was “working with the Communications team to determine next organizational steps.”

Harris had faced intense scrutiny from the turnover inside her press office, which began to slow following several shake-ups during the vice president’s first 16 months in office.
