As President Joe Biden’s administration refuses to put an end to attempts to negotiate a revival of the Iran Nuclear Deal, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton advised that the United States should not be negotiating with the country in any capacity.
“I would not be negotiating with Iran on anything right now, including the nuclear agreement,” she told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on Thursday.

“I don’t think we should look like we’re seeking an agreement at a time when the people of Iran are standing up to their oppressors and we are giving them hope and heart,” she said.

On Sept. 16, protests erupted in Iran in nearly 140 cities and 30 provinces. The demonstrations were sparked in response to the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was in custody after allegedly not following the country’s strict female dress code.
Brig. Gen. Amirali Hajizadeh of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Iran admitted that roughly 300 people have been killed during the protests since her death, per Mehr News Agency.
“What’s happening now deserves our full-throated support. And I think every time anyone speaks on behalf of the United States government, they need to be saying that they stand with the people of Iran, particularly with the women and girls,” Clinton said.
“I was part of a group of women leaders who called for the U.N. to kick Iran off the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women,” she explained, voicing her support for using international channels to take action against Iran. “They should never have been on there in the first place.”
Despite denouncing the treatment of anti-regime protesters, the Biden administration has not said talks with Iran are off the table, drawing criticism.
“The United States stands with Iranian women and all the citizens of Iran who are inspiring the world with their bravery,” Biden said in a recent statement.

In October, U.S. Special Envoy to Iran Robert Malley said he “makes no apology” for “trying to do everything we can to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.” State Department spokesperson Ned Price, however, said that an Iran nuclear deal is “not our focus right now.”
“The Iranians have made very clear that this is not a deal that they have been prepared to make. A deal certainly does not appear imminent,” he said in October.
