Washington D.C. issued a code red air quality alert once again, as smoke from large Canadian wildfires makes its way south.

The alert warns of “very poor” air quality, potentially putting the very young and old, and those with weak respiratory systems at risk. IQAir, an air quality technology company, reported that the city had the worst air quality on Earth as of Thursday morning, with a 167 air quality index.

Washington’s emergency alert system recommended a number of precautions to take against the hazardous conditions.

“A Code Red air quality alert has been issued for today, June 29, 2023. This means very poor air quality is expected, which may be unhealthy for people with heart or lung disease, older adults, children and teens. Reduced visibility is expected,” the alert began. “Wearing a mask may help limit irritation for those suffering from respiratory illnesses. Consider moving physical activities indoors or rescheduling them.”
