LIHEAP utility payments: Application for help with utility bill payments closing in one day

Applications for aid from the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program in Georgia will close tomorrow.
LIHEAP is a federal assistance program that helps financially hard-pressed people pay their utility bills. It assists impoverished households with home energy bills, energy crises, and minor energy-related home repairs, also known as weatherization, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. Each state operates the program autonomously, and funds are provided by the federal government. The Georgia Division of Family and Children Services has applications open for the program until Friday.

“The Georgia Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) is committed to ensuring that persons with low income, especially those who are senior citizens or are medically homebound, have meaningful access to all programs and activities conducted or supported by local Community Action Agencies (CAA),” the website reads.
To be eligible, applicants need to be United States citizens, have a gross annual household income at least 60% below the state’s median income, and have full responsibility for paying for their home’s energy bills.

A limited number of applicants will be accepted due to limitations in funding. On average, LIHEAP benefits reach about 20% of those eligible. Once funds run out, no more may be used for the rest of the year until a new package is authorized by Congress.
LIHEAP payments apply only to heating and cooling costs. The payments do not cover other household costs, such as water or sewage bills.
