Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has a possibly brighter future with a key voting group than former President Donald Trump or President Joe Biden, a new poll shows.

An Economist-YouGov poll shows the Florida governor is polling better among independents when asked if they want him to run for president in 2024 when compared with Trump and Biden.

For Biden and Trump, a majority of independents say they do not want them running in 2024. Independent voters say Biden should not run 67%-13%, with 20% who say they are unsure, while they believe Trump should not run 59%-28%, with 13% saying they are unsure.

With DeSantis, a plurality of independents say they do not want him to run in 2024, but the number of unsure voters offers more flexibility than the other two candidates. The survey shows 47% of independent voters saying they do not want DeSantis running in 2024, compared to 16% who want him to run and 36% who are unsure.

DeSantis, having not been on a presidential ballot, has more room to grow with independents than Biden and Trump, whom nearly all independents have clear opinions on.

Among those who voted for Trump in 2020, 39% say DeSantis should run, 31% say he should not run, and 30% say they are unsure. The three-way split in this group has 51% of those surveyed overall saying they do not want him to run, which is higher than Trump and Biden.

Trump has 63% of those who voted for him in 2020 saying he should run again in 2024, while Biden has 42%, a plurality, of his 2020 voters saying he should run for reelection in 2024, per the poll. Among the entire group of adults surveyed, 63% say Biden should not run in 2024 and 57% say Trump should not run in 2024.

Other polls have also shown concerns uniquely about Trump and Biden compared to other candidates. A recent NBC News poll shows a majority of adults have major or moderate concerns about both men’s physical and mental health.

In the overall polling average compiled by RealClearPolitics, Trump leads the GOP presidential field with DeSantis in second place. The rest of the field is far behind the two Florida men. Biden is on track to be renominated by the Democratic Party in 2024, and no major candidates in the party are challenging him.
