Olivia Dalton steps behind the White House briefing podium

Principal White House deputy press secretary Olivia Dalton, a potential successor to press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, took questions in the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room for the first time.
Dalton, who moved to the White House last summer after a brief stint as U.N. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield‘s communications director, has engaged with reporters more informally aboard Air Force One roughly eight times.

Dalton was joined behind the podium on Tuesday by National Economic Director Lael Brainard, who has been in her post since February, for their briefing room debuts.

Dalton, who works under Jean-Pierre and relied sparingly on her briefing book, was not spared tough questions, being peppered with queries about Hunter Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland, even if she did not directly answer them.
“Every president of the United States has invited their family to a state dinner. This president also has a family,” she said.
