The average payment per household member is $183, and the maximum payment for a household of one is $281. A household of eight can receive a maximum allotment of $1,691, according to the state’s Children and Family Services department. The state of Alabama received $2.16 billion in 2022 for SNAP participants, which includes temporary COVID-19 relief from 2020 through 2022.

In Alabama, 761,100 residents, or 15% of the state population, participated in SNAP in 2022, per The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. Twelve percent of the total United States population participated in SNAP. On average, SNAP households across the nation received around $240 a month in the years 2019 and 2020.

If eligible applicants for SNAP benefits are active, the monthly amount should be available for use through the Electronic Benefits Transfer card, which can be swiped at checkout in grocery stores, similar to debit cards.

Alabama beneficiaries can check the status of SNAP, the next available benefit date, recent transaction history, and other additional information through the MyDHR portal. More resources for SNAP and other services can be found through the Alabama Food Assistance Division websites or through the Alabama government website and Food and Nutrition Assistance page.
