Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) dodged pledging his support for whoever the eventual 2024 nominee is, a move that puts his position on the Republican 2024 debate stage in peril.

After announcing that he was suing the Biden administration for perceived interference in Florida’s education, DeSantis was asked to respond to former President Donald Trump‘s attacks against him the night before, and whether he would still commit to supporting whoever the eventual GOP 2024 nominee is for president.

DeSantis gave a long answer regarding Trump’s attacks, without naming him, and avoided answering whether he would still make the pledge.

“So what I would say is this. When you are saying that Cuomo did better on COVID than Florida did, you are revealing yourself to just be full of it,” he began. “Nobody believes that.”

The Florida governor then claimed that Trump had smothered him with praises throughout 2020 and 2021, particularly regarding his dealing with COVID-19. DeSantis then accused Trump of saying things that are “false,” and said he believes he will beat President Joe Biden in 2024.

“He’s trying to backtrack because he, you know, views he needs to do that,” DeSantis said. “And he’s saying things that are false, and so that’s fine. If you want to do it. I don’t think people are going to buy it. I don’t think it’s going to ultimately matter. In the end. I think we’re going to be successful, but at the same time, you know, you got to get into these processes. It’s like, I want to beat Biden, okay, I will do that. I will get that done.”

“And I think more importantly than that, I will actually bring these policies for a landing and get it all done up there. And it’s one thing to promise things, but when you don’t deliver on it, then it’s like OK, then they get in, and then they get to do stuff when the by the time they get in. So we’ll do it.”

The governor then appeared to vaguely address whether or not he would support the eventual 2024 GOP nominee, without giving a straight answer.

“But it’s an important process. And you know, you respect the process, and you respect the people’s decisions, how this goes, but I’m, I’m very confident that those decisions are going to be positive for us back there,” he said.

Pledging to support the 2024 Republican nominee has been established by the Republican National Committee as a requirement to participate in the presidential debates, meaning DeSantis could risk losing his spot if he refuses to commit.
