The applicants of this program must be at least 21 years old and must not turn 24 before Sept. 1. Applicants must also be former Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services foster youth who were in care on or after their 18th birthday.

Other requirements applicants need to meet include having a household income at or below 100% of the area median income for a single-person household or 120% of the area median income for a household of two or more persons. They also must have been negatively affected by the coronavirus pandemic and may not be currently enrolled in another guaranteed income program.

Those interested in applying can do so online on the Los Angeles County’s website.

Last year, the same program selected 1,000 people to receive $1,000 every month for three years, and now, the program is adding 200 people who will receive the same amount every month for two years, a spokesperson for Los Angeles County told the Washington Examiner.

The previous 1,000 recipients were randomly selected from a pool of eligible applicants.

The University of Pennsylvania and other research partners will conduct a randomized control study to measure the outcomes of the program. Participation in the study is not required to receive the monthly payments, but those who do will be asked to provide information periodically on different aspects of their overall health and well-being. They will receive a $30 gift card for every survey they complete.

An additional 2,000 applicants were randomly chosen to participate in the study as part of the control group. The control group does not receive the $1,000 payments every month but will be asked to complete the periodic surveys and interviews and will be compensated with a $30 gift card for every survey they take.
