The Democratic National Committee, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee are anticipating abortion playing a decisive role in the 2024 elections — and they’re not convinced by Republican candidates who are appealing to voters as centrists on the issue.

Specifically, DNC Chairman Jaime Harrison called out Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) on a Wednesday press call, claiming that her moderate posture on the issue is just for show.

“You get people like Nancy Mace, who will get on TV and say one thing, and then when she goes on the floor, she votes another way,” Harrison claimed. “We’re going to call out that hypocrisy and that extremism and let them know that everyone in the Republican conference, every single Republican, is supporting these extreme measures.”

Mace told the Washington Examiner in a statement, “I’m not going to be lectured by those who support abortion up to the moment of birth.”

“The American people know the Left has taken an extreme position on this issue,” she said. “And don’t get me started on their war on women and girls.”

She further encouraged the DNC to “keep trying to fundraise off me if they want, but our focus will continue to be on finding solutions, not playing politics with women and children.”

Mace’s district is rated “likely Republican” by Cook Political Report.

The South Carolina congresswoman maintains a “B” rating with top anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America. However, she has voted against the organization’s wishes in the past. Most recently, in 2022 Mace voted in favor of the Right to Contraception Act, explaining, “Not only do different contraceptives prevent pregnancies, but some are also needed in order to maintain a healthy and well-functioning body.”

“South Carolina is banning almost all exceptions for women including who’ve been raped and victims of incest,” she noted at the time.

The Republican reportedly expressed displeasure during a closed-door meeting with Republican leadership earlier this month, during which plans were announced to take up a proposal to fortify limits on taxpayer-funded abortion. “Why the hell are we doing this?” Mace asked Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) and Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN), per Politico.

Mace has been particularly vocal on the issue of abortion as the 2024 elections approach. Last month in an exclusive interview with the Washington Examiner, she said that her stature as a reelected Republican in a purple district puts her in a position to offer others “a road map and show that middle ground.”

“This is the road map to winning in states and in districts where independents outnumber Republicans or where Democrats and independents outnumber Republicans — where we can win over suburban women and suburban moms. There’s a path to doing that. But you’ve got to take positions and be vocal about them and show that you care,” she explained.

“It’s interesting because I mostly talk about exceptions for rape, for incest, for life of the mother. I talk about women’s access to birth control. I talk about adoption services. And that’s too radical for some people on the far Right,” she said of opposition to her stance from within the Republican Party.
