CalFresh is California’s form of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, a program designed to provide low-income families and individuals with food benefits.
The CalFresh program does not have an expiration for the food stamps or a required time limit in which they can be used in stores. However, since CalFresh follows the guidelines administered by SNAP, the federal program’s benefits will expire if unused for a prolonged period of time.

The CalFresh office also determines the overall duration period of benefits for each person’s income, and after that time runs out, beneficiaries will need a recertification of eligibility. CalFresh benefits depend on the person’s income and can be as short as a month or the maximum benefit period of three years.
SNAP benefits expire after 9 months of non-use, meaning if you do not use your Electronic Benefits Transfer card during this time, the benefits will be removed from your account. Exceptions to this nine-month expiration rule include members of the military who have been deployed or beneficiaries who have been hospitalized or incarcerated.

Once applicants are approved, benefits will typically automatically renew every six to 12 months if the beneficiary uses their EBT card often, which is used as a debit card and accepted at most grocery stores in the United States.
Additional information for California residents can be found on the CalFresh website or by contacting the local county’s office. Recipients can check CalFresh benefits online, or the expiration dates can be found on the back of their EBT card.
