Texas Gov. Abbott signs bill to ‘protect the integrity of women’s sports’

Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) signed the Save Women’s Sports Act into law Thursday. It’s some of the latest legislative action nationwide to prevent biological men from competing in women’s sports.

The law prohibits those who are biologically male but who identify as transgender women from participating in women’s sporting competitions at colleges and universities in Texas.

“Today is an important day for female athletes across the state of Texas, including little girls who aspire to one day compete in college sports,” Abbott said in a statement.

“The Save Women’s Sports Act protects young women at Texas colleges and universities by prohibiting men from competing on a team or as an individual against them in college sports. Sports have inspired many women to cast bold visions and dreams of what they want to achieve. The legacy of women’s sports will be safeguarded for generations to come. Women in Texas can be assured that the integrity of their sports will be protected in our state,” he continued.

Critics of the bill say it targets transgender athletes, and the ACLU of Texas called the bill “unfair, unconstitutional, and just plain cruel.”

The law is an expansion of a 2021 bill Abbott signed into law that prevented biological men from competing in women’s sports in grades kindergarten through twelve.

The bill is the latest signed into law by Abbott this year that deals with transgender issues. Abbott signed a bill into law earlier this month that bans transgender surgeries for minors in the state.

The law signed earlier this month bans healthcare providers from prescribing puberty blockers or hormones, and it prohibits surgeries designed to transition the gender of a minor. Those found to be in violation of the law risk of losing their medical license in the state.

Several other states have passed laws that advocates say are aimed at protecting biological women in sports.
