Calgary’s Black Lives Matter president charged with hate crime

The Black Lives Matter chapter president of Calgary, Canada, was charged with a hate crime over an altercation near a Catholic school.
Adora Nwofor, 47, allegedly blocked someone from entering St. Thomas Aquinas School on 26 Avenue SW on May 26. As a result, she was charged on June 2 with mischief for “wilfully obstructing and interfering” with the use of the school, which is “primarily used for religious worship and educational purposes.” According to court documents, Nwofor was motivated by “bias, prejudice, or hate based on race or ethnic origin.”

Nwofor was released on non-cash bail on June 2 on the condition that she keep at least a 100-meter distance from the school and does not have any contact with St. Thomas Aquinas School staff. Her defense lawyer, Chad Haggerty, was also present at the bail hearing.
Haggerty is also representing Taylor McNallie, another BLM activist who stands accused of using a megaphone to assault off-duty Sheriff Elena Cunningham near Calgary Courts Centre. A rally was going on at the time to protest an alleged assault against a black woman at the hands of Calgary police. McNallie does not deny that the megaphone hit Cunningham but claims she hit her by accident.

This comes as the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation was recently revealed to have a deficit of $8.5 million after earning only $9.3 million during fiscal 2022, which was an 88% slide from a year before, tax forms show.
Nwofor will next appear in court on Friday.
