The Washington Examiner’s Hugo Gurdon shared his insight on the winners and losers of an ever-growing GOP field for the presidential nomination.

Gurdon appeared on Fox News’s Mornings with Maria Bartiromo on Thursday to predict that the large number of Republican candidates, among them “no-name candidates,” will “split that vote and allow [former President Donald Trump] to run through the middle.” The editor-in-chief made his television appearance on the same day Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, a Republican, announced his candidacy.

“No one’s asking for these people. No one’s craving and clamoring for their candidacy,” Gurdon said. “There have been only two candidates that Republicans are really serious about at the moment. One is former President Trump — he’s massively in the lead. The other is Ron DeSantis, governor of Florida.”

Gurdon pointed out that Trump has lost to President Joe Biden before, and as the current president has already launched his reelection campaign, it might be time to have another candidate face off with him. From his perspective, DeSantis is a “much, much more serious threat” to the Democratic Party. Meanwhile, more candidates are joining the race despite the polls swinging largely in Trump and DeSantis’s favor, leaving the other candidates at the bottom of most polls.

“I think that some of the ones right at the bottom of the scale are just there to burnish their reputation, and they can put it on their resumes and talk to people about having been presidential candidates,” Gurdon said.

The Republican National Committee set a standard of a candidate having at least 1% favorability in the polls to participate in its primary debate.
