Marjorie Taylor Greene calls on Republicans to defend Jan. 6 defendants

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) urged her Republican colleagues to speak up in defense of Jan. 6 defendants.
Greene has openly advocated and associated with those arrested over their presence in or around the Capitol during the riot. Speaking with the Washington Examiner after a hearing led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) with Jan. 6 defendants and families, Greene called on her Republican colleagues to follow her example.

On Tuesday, Gaetz hosted a hearing titled the “Field Hearing on January 6, 2021,” in which he and six other House members heard testimonies from seven different witnesses with relevance to Jan. 6. The group included legal experts, family members of Jan. 6 defendants, and some defendants themselves.
“I tell them all the time. I think it’s an issue you can’t ignore,” Greene said, referring to the treatment of Jan. 6 defendants. “It’s something that has to be talked about because people are being affected every single day by it. And we heard the testimonies today.”
“So it’s … an issue that, of course, has been talked about every single day since Jan. 6. But we can’t allow a weaponized government to persecute Americans,” she continued. “We just can’t allow it. So it’s something that we have to talk about.”
Greene also touted her introduction of articles of impeachment against U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Matthew Graves, whom she accuses of subverting the justice system.

“Graves has prosecuted hundreds of individuals who participated in a political protest and has sought lengthy pretrial detention, even for nonviolent defendants. His cruel and unusual tactics have driven innocent people, arrested on phony charges, to suicide, including Matthew Perna,” a press release from Greene’s office said.
The aunt of Matthew Perna, Geri Perna, gave her testimony at the hearing and personally thanked Greene for introducing the impeachment proceedings against Graves.
