Marjorie Taylor Greene calls for defunding special counsel investigation

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) called for defunding special counsel Jack Smith‘s investigation into former President Donald Trump on Monday, calling the investigation and indictment a “weaponization of the government.”
Greene said she was writing an appropriations rider to defund Smith and his investigation into whether Trump mishandled classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

“I will not vote for ANY appropriations bill to fund the weaponization of government. I hope every one of my Republican colleagues will join me,” Greene said in a series of tweets.
“We have to use the power of appropriations to stop the weaponization of government,” she added. “I’m introducing an appropriations rider to DEFUND Special Counsel Jack Smith’s office and entire investigation. Where are the investigations into true criminals like Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton?”

Other House Republicans have supported calls to defund portions of the Department of Justice in response to the federal indictment of Trump.
Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) on Friday suggested invoking the Holman rule, which allows Congress to make amendments to appropriations bills that target specific programs or people. The amendments could lead to reduced pay or terminations and changes to a specific agency, office, or program.
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) supported Greene’s call, stating that it was an article he “flexed” and endorsed.

The call comes as Trump faces 37 federal charges related to the alleged mishandling of classified documents. The Justice Department unveiled a 49-page indictment of Trump on Friday, which included charges related to the Espionage Act, making false claims, and conspiracy to obstruct justice.
Trump will appear at the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida on Tuesday, June 13, where he is expected to plead not guilty.
