A majority of adults surveyed in a recent poll believe the indictment against former President Donald Trump by a federal jury on charges related to his alleged mishandling of classified documents is serious.

An ABC News-Ipsos poll found that 61% of respondents think the indictment is serious, including 63% of independents and 38% of Republicans.

The level of severity perceived in the classified documents indictment is higher than in the indictment of Trump earlier this year in New York on charges related to allegedly falsifying business records related to alleged hush payments to two women in 2016.

In April, only 52% of adults saw the New York indictment as serious, which included 54% of independents and 21% of Republicans, per the same pollster.

When asked if Trump should be charged with a crime in the classified documents case, 48% said he should while 35% said he should not. The figures are down when compared to the New York case in April, where 50% said he should be charged and 33% said he should not.

The poll, conducted from June 9-10, also found that 46% of respondents believe he should suspend his presidential campaign, compared with 38% who believe he should not drop out of the 2024 race.

The survey was released the same day a poll showed Trump with a commanding 61% of the vote among likely GOP primary voters, with Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) trailing with 23%, while no other candidate gets into the double digits. The indictment does not appear to be hurting the former president in the Republican primary in the immediate term.
