Fire on board USS Abraham Lincoln leaves nine sailors with minor injuries

A fire aboard the Navy’s USS Abraham Lincoln has left nine sailors with minor injuries, according to a 3rd Fleet spokesperson.
The blaze, which broke out on Tuesday morning while the ship was roughly 30 nautical miles off the coast of Southern California, was “quickly identified and extinguished through the crew’s firefighting efforts,” according to spokesman Lt. Samuel Boyle. The sailors injured in the fight were treated aboard the ship, though their types of wounds were not divulged.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, and this ship will be able to operate in the area following the incident.
In July 2020, a fire broke out on the USS Bonhomme Richard while the ship was docked in San Diego. A navy sailor, Ryan Sawyer Mays, was acquitted in September after being charged with arson and the willful hazarding of a ship, though there was minimal physical evidence directly tying him to the fire.

The blaze burned for five days, reaching temperatures in excess of 1,400 degrees Fahrenheit, and spread to 11 of the 14 decks. Sixty-three personnel, including 40 sailors and 23 civilians, were treated for minor injuries, such as heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation related to the fire and the attempts to put out the flames.
