YouTube demonetizes videos over ‘misgendering’ in change in policy

YouTube is now demonetizing videos featuring deliberate “misgendering” of individuals, a policy not previously communicated in the company’s terms.

Conservative personality Candace Owens reported on Monday that YouTube asked her to “delete every video that I’ve ever done pertaining to gender in which I have accurately gendered someone.”

She also said that YouTube told her that it constituted “hateful conduct” to refer to individuals by the pronouns of the gender they do not identify with. This is a new change for the company’s hateful conduct policy, which did not previously list a ban on “misgendering.”

YouTube did not remove the offending videos, but it did remove ads from “several videos on Candace Owen’s channel for violating our monetization policies, including those against hateful and derogatory content,” a Google spokesperson confirmed to NBC News.

YouTube’s anti-harassment policy protects against “harmful behavior such as deliberately insulting or shaming minors, threats, bullying, doxing, or encouraging abusive fan behavior.”

Owens said in an August 2021 video that the “trans movement represents a caricature of what it means to be a woman.”

YouTube appears to be moving in an opposite direction than some of its competitors, including Twitter. Twitter reversed its policy against “misgendering” in April. It also hosted What is a Woman, a documentary by Daily Wire host Matt Walsh interviewing several experts about what makes a woman, including a transgender person who has since detransitioned, a gender-affirming therapist, a licensed gynecologist and surgeon, a university professor, and a Democratic lawmaker.
