Gavin Newsom wants to end national gun violence with 28th Amendment

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) is seeking to propose a new amendment to the U.S. Constitution that will crack down on gun ownership in the nation.

The California governor and his Campaign for Democracy PAC announced the plan Thursday morning, pitching a 28th Amendment to address the rise in national gun violence. The proposed outline includes raising the minimum age to buy a firearm from 18 to 21, enforcing mandatory background checks, establishing waiting periods for all gun purchases, and banning the civilian purchase of “assault rifles.”

“This is a mechanism to address that despair,” Newsom told Politico. “We’re sick of being on the defense and throwing up our hands. We want to go on the offense and be for something and build a movement that’s bottom-up, not top-down.”

Newsom, with $10 million left from his 2022 reelection campaign, wants to try and slow gun violence by adding four new federal laws while keeping the Second Amendment intact.

“Through an aggressive, coordinated and sustained state-by-state organizing campaign through the 2024 election, the Campaign for Democracy’s mission is to confront and defeat unAmerican authoritarianism,” the PAC’s website reads, referring to “extremist” Republicans’ advocacy for complete firearm freedoms.

For Congress to consider a constitutional amendment, it requires support from 33 other states, in addition to California, to assemble a national convention. Under Newsom’s governorship, California is the leading state in the fight for gun control.
