Wildfire smoke: Hundreds of US flights canceled or delayed

Hundreds of United States flights have been canceled or delayed due to smoke from Canadian wildfires that has blanketed much of the Northeast.
The Federal Aviation Administration announced on Thursday that the smoke would continue to have an effect on air travel, with flights in some airports being delayed altogether. In the morning hours of Thursday, the FAA paused Northeastern flights bound for LaGuardia Airport and Philadelphia International Airport due to low visibility and delayed all flights bound for Liberty International Airport.

“Reduced visibility from wildfire smoke will continue to impact air travel today. We will likely need to take steps to manage the flow of traffic safely into New York City, DC, Philadelphia and Charlotte,” the FAA tweeted.

Flights taking off from the Northeast, Ohio, and mid-Atlantic regions are those primarily affected by the wildfires, with fears of accidents due to low visibility.
LaGuardia Airport urged passengers to contact their airline for information on flight delays.

“Low visibility due to smoke conditions in the region is impacting flight arrivals & departures,” it tweeted. “Contact your airline to determine flight status.”
