Wildfire smoke: Here are all the events the Canadian wildfire smoke is affecting

The recent smoky weather with a fog-like appearance has resulted in concern from the general public and delays and potential cancellations for events or transportation.

The weather is the result of several wildfires in Canada. The smog is now making its way over to the United States and impacting major cities such as New York City and Washington, D.C. The National Weather Service has advised that people in much of the Northeast and mid-Atlantic should avoid outdoor activities on Wednesday due to the air quality being unhealthy.

The smokey weather has affected several events and other outdoor activities. People were advised to plan around the weather.

LaGuardia Airport, located in New York, informed travelers that the weather conditions caused flight disruptions. Travelers are advised to check with their airline to determine the status of their flight.

Additionally, the Federal Aviation Administration announced Tuesday afternoon that the smoke has slowed traffic to and from New York City area airports due to the reduced visibility caused by the wildfire smoke.

As of 2:30 p.m. EST, there have been 1,801 flights either within, into, or out of the United States on Wednesday, with 107 flights canceled, according to data from FlightAware.

School activities in several states have also been affected by the smog. A high school in Bethesda, Maryland, opted to move its graduation ceremony indoors. Likewise, a school in Brooklyn, New York, chose to postpone its “Spring Fling” dance party, and a school in Montclair, New Jersey, canceled a fifth-grade trip to a Six Flags amusement park, according to Reuters.

In New York City, public schools were open for class on Wednesday, though all outdoor events and activities were either canceled, postponed, or moved indoors.

A baseball game between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Detroit Tigers was postponed as well, according to CBS.

Another baseball game, between the Norfolk Tides and the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, was supposed to be held on Tuesday evening, but it was canceled due to the weather, according to Wavy TV 10.

Likewise, a game between the New York Yankees and the Chicago White Sox was pushed back to tomorrow, June 8. The game will now be set at 4:05 p.m. EST on Thursday.

A game between the Washington Nationals and the Arizona Diamondbacks is set to play tonight as scheduled, with the first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. EST.

A soccer game for the National Women’s Soccer League, between NJ/NY Gotham FC and the Orlando Pride, has been postponed from Wednesday to Aug. 9 due to the poor air conditions.

A map of the United States shows that as of 3 p.m., major cities such as New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., are being heavily affected by this smoke, according to a map from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Fairfax County issued a Code Red Air Quality alert on Wednesday, meaning the air quality was unhealthy for everyone in Fairfax County and the region. Additionally, the Philadelphia region announced a Code Red Air Quality alert on Wednesday, according to CBS.
