An outspoken Houston attorney is taking up Attorney General Ken Paxton’s defense in his impeachment trial.

Tony Buzbee first publicly appeared as Paxton’s lawyer on Wednesday, when he gave a press conference discussing the case. In his address, the attorney blasted the charges against Paxton as flimsy and baseless. He expressed confidence that the charges would crumble upon any further scrutiny.

Buzbee quoted Republican state Rep. John Smithee in deriding the allegations.

“‘[I would] characterize this process as hearsay within hearsay within hearsay,’ he told his colleagues on the floor. ‘No prosecutor, no legitimate prosecutor, no credible prosecutor would ever even try to get a grand jury indictment based on this kind of foolishness. You know, the old saying is you can indict a ham sandwich in the state of Texas. On this evidence, you couldn’t even indict a ham sandwich.'”

“Not even traffic court would accept this kind of foolishness,” Buzbee added. “The speaker has done great damage to the institutional reputation of the House of Representatives.”

The Houston attorney accused the House of overreach and abuse of power, and he said the impeachment was rushed through without any proper evidence.

“It was rushed in 72 hours with a four-hour hearing,” Buzbee said of the impeachment. “And we talked about, no witnesses, testimony or documents, hearsay. It’s very disturbing to me, as a lawyer, that this can happen in our state of Texas.”

Earlier, Buzbee described the impeachment as “fatally flawed” in an Instagram post. He expressed hope “that the process in the Texas Senate will be fair, reasoned and transparent.”

The prosecution has also attracted considerable legal talent, recruiting high-profile attorneys Dick DeGuerin and Rusty Hardin.

Buzbee has represented a number of high-profile clients over the years, including former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, 20 women accusing NFL quarterback Deshaun Watson of sexual assault, and more recently, 120 victims of the disaster at rapper Travis Scott’s Astroworld concert. In the trial against Watson, Buzbee faced off against Hardin, whom he will face again in the impeachment trial.
