Former President Donald Trump argued his former lawyer Michael Cohen used him for “selfish” gains in his response to Cohen’s motion to dismiss a lawsuit against him.

In early May, Cohen asked a judge to dismiss the lawsuit filed against him by the former president, who claimed that Cohen breached a contract when he cooperated with the Manhattan grand jury that later indicted him.

Alejandro Britto, Trump’s lawyer, filed a response in opposition to Cohen’s motion to dismiss on Monday, saying Cohen “conferred substantial benefits during his representation of the Plaintiff and utilized such benefits for purposes of obtaining selfish, financial profit at the expense of Plaintiff.”

Trump accused Cohen of “egregious breaches of fiduciary duty and contract” in connection with the publication of books and the production of a podcast that “are intended to be embarrassing or detrimental” to the former president.

Legal counsel for Trump filed a lawsuit against Cohen in April, alleging that Cohen broke confidentiality agreements with the former president. They are seeking $500 million in damages for Cohen violating an attorney-client relationship, among other claims.

“There is no question that Cohen owed a fiduciary duty to Plaintiff,” Britto said.

Trump’s lawyer added that Cohen’s arguments are “devoid of merit.”

“Cohen discusses the rulings in unrelated legal matters, makes references to various news articles designed to taint this court’s view of the Plaintiff and this case, unnecessarily injects invectives designed to exacerbate this already caustic matter,” Britto said.

Legal counsel for Cohen argued in their motion to dismiss that the lawsuit was “an abusive act of pure retaliation” and combined “the worst of Mr. Trump’s vindictive impulses.

“The complaint, frivolous and scattershot, is an abusive act of pure retaliation and witness intimidation, albeit a ham-fisted one. It must be dismissed as a matter of law.”
